The 7th and 8th graders are taking a break from painting and are using oil pastels, which in a way is like painting. It’s all about color mixing and adding layers of color.  We talked about the texture used in impressionistic paintings as well as the use of complementary colors to create shadow rather than using black. We also talked about creating movement through the repetition of color and line and looked at images from VanGogh, Monet, and Degas for inspiration. The students created these texture squares to get acquainted with the oil pastels. They were to create four different textures, 2 cool and 2 warm, that go from dark to light. Next class period, students will select an image of an impressionistic painting, change the composition and begin creating their own rendition.
